Description
1,943,536 -oFF THE SUPPLY oF LIQUID To REsERvoIRs, cAsKs, AND OTHER CONTAINERS Jan. 16, 1934. J; MULLER VALVE MECHANISM FOR CUTTING Filed May 24, 1928 Patented Jan. 16, 1934 UNT@ STATES VALVE MECHANISM FOR CUTTING OF"l THE SUPPLY F LEQUED T0 RESERVOIRS, CASKS, AND GTHER CONTAINERS Jacques Muller, La Garenne Colombes, France Application May 24, 1928, Serial No. 280,339, and in France May 25, 1927 3 Claims.
The present invention has for its object to automatically stop the arrival of liquid in the reservoir when the latter is full or is replenished up to a predetermined height.
The invention consists in principle in providing between the apparatus for supplying liquid and the reservoir container, a lling tube closed at its lower end and provided with side-openings, outside of which, and concentric to the tube is slidably arranged a slide-valve. the side walls of which are pierced by openings adapted to cooperate with the openings in the tube.
The movement of the slide-valve depends upon the level of the liquid in the reservoir through the intermediary of a float and the slide-valve is provided with uid tight means applied at the time of the cutting ofi ci the liquid supply against the openings of the tube, the iiuid tight means being most firmly applied when the relling pressure is strongest.
The invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing which shows a view partly in cross section, and partly in elevation of a sliding cut-oli" device mounted on the replenishment passage of a reservoir, in which the iioat is independent, the replenishment being effected through the upper part of the reservoir.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that the petrol reservoir l has a iilling opening 2 at the top, to the inside of which is riveted at 3 a tube 4. Outside, and on the extension of the tube 4 is also riveted at 3 a cap 5 having a central screw-threaded opening 6 receiving a tube 7 closed at its lower end 8 and pierced by side openings 9, 10. The tube 7 is capped at its upper end by the cover 11 being iixed to it by a bayonetfitting 12 and in which a sealing member 13 constantly pressed on the end of the tube 7 about the opening 14 under the inuence of spring 15 bearing against the end 16 of the cover 11 assures fluid-tightness.
Around the tube 7 can slide a cover or slidevalve 17 the side 18 of which is provided with openings 29, 30 and which moreover is controlled as regards displacement by its central stem 19 having a lower stop 2O and of which the head 21 normally rests in the bottom 22 of the tube 7.
On the extension of the axis of the stem 19 is positioned the stem 23 of a float 24 the displacement of which is controlled by cross-pieces 25, 26 riveted at 27, 28 to the tube 4.
When replenishing the reservoir 1, the cover 11 is iirst lifted oli" and the tube 7 is put into communication with the lling apparatus (funnel, pump, etc., not shown) which may or may not be provided with suitable connections. A certain play being necessary between the sliding member of the iiller to avoid seizure, means must be provided, at the end of the lling, to eiect the perfect duid-tightness of the cover for the openings 9, 10 of the tube 7, and for this purpose the slide-valve 17 is provided at the lower end of its openings 9, l0 with small pump plungers 41, 42 for moving across the openings 9, 19 and terminated by small elastic discs 43, 44, which completely cover the openings 9, 10.
Between the discs 43, 44 is positioned a light spring 35 for the positioning of the discs upon the openings which they are intended to stop up. To the pressure due to the spring 35 must be added at the time or" the filling that or" the feed apparatus. The fluid-tightness is thus more strong as the pressure increases in the feed apparatus.
When the level. of the liquid in the reservoir reaches a iixed height, the iioat 24 presses up by its stem 23 coming into contact with the stop 29, the slide-valve 17 which then progressively closes the openings 9, lo by the plain parts of its side surfaces. Replenishment being completed, the replenishment apparatus is taken away and the cover ll is replaced on the tube 7 which is rendered fluid-tight.
It must be understood that the position of the iioat may be adjustable on its stem so as to adjust the quantity of liquid present when replenishment is to be completed.
Moreover the liquid supply cut-ofi system instead of being attached to the reservoir could be arranged at the end of the feed apparatus tube without changing the principle of the invention.
I claim:
l. Apparatus for automatically cutting ofi the liquid supply to reservoirs, comprising a filling tube for the reservoir, a slide obturator, associated with the iilling tube and operated by a float and means for effecting a closing action of the obturator which becomes more powerful as the pressure and the speed of flow of the liquid increases.
2. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the lling tube is closed at the lower end thereof and is provided with side openings automatically cut off by the obturator according to the Volume of liquid in the reservoir.
3. Apparatus according to claim 1 in which the filling tube is closed at its lower end and is provided with side openings and in which the slide obturator is provided with pump plungers for moving across the openings in the iilling tube and carrying at their outer extremities elastic discs for covering the openings of said tube, a small spring lightly applying the 'discs to the wall of the tube surrounding said openings.
JACQUES MULLER.
