Abstract

290,752. Bythway, E. M. Nov. 19, 1926. Driving - gear. - Linkwork for driving crank shafts from the piston rods of reciprocating engines comprises a compound lever embodying a leg and two arms the leg, being rocked by the piston rod and the arms being coupled respectively to separate throws of the crank shaft. Tre piston rod 8, Fig. 1, rocks the leg 1 of a lever fulcrummed at 6 and provided with arms 2 coupled. by connecting rods 14 to a two throw crank shaft 15. Another pair of arms 2a disposed at a different angle to the leg are also shown driving a second crank shaft 17. The arms are preferably half the length of the leg giving a crank throw equal to .one quarter of the piston stroke. In a modification, Fig. 7, the compound lever 4 is of triangular form, the central rib 3 comprising the main leg formed at its lower end with a slot engaging a pin 11 on the piston crosshead 10. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 8 and 10, the arrangement is duplicated to drive a four throw crank shaft 15. The compound levers are disposed on opposite sides of the crank shaft on shafts 6, the main legs 1 and arms 2 being suitably displaced along the shafts. The legs 1 are rocked in opposite directions being connected to blocks 19 which slide on fixed guide bars 20 and are attached to the upper and lower stretches respectively of an endless chain 22 carried on sprocket wheels 21. The outer leg 1 is directly actuated by the pin 18 on the piston crosshead 10, the inner arm being oppositely driven through the chain. According to a further modification, the two compound levers may be arranged coaxially, one being carried by a sleeve rockable upon a shaft carrying the other lever, the leg and arms of which extend through suitable slots formed in the sleeve. The connecting rods 14 may be telescopic or articulated to secure ease in movement.
