Abstract

Apparatus for making filaments and films; cellulose xanthates, processes for making filaments from.-For the purpose of distributing within a solution of cellulose or a cellulose compound, for example, in viscose, to be used for spinning artificial filaments, bands &c., finely divided liquid or solid bodies, the spinning solution is first filtered and deaerated, and then during its passage towards the spinning machine and after the solution has been separated from bulk, there is added the liquid or solid body in such a manner as to avoid the introduction of air. Thus, if oil is to be added to viscose, the former is supplied in regulated quantities by means of a pump similar to a spinning pump, and is introduced into the pipe through which the supply of viscose to the spinnerets passes, the mixture. of oil and viscose passing through a series of finely perforated plates, and then through a mixing chamber containing a paddle &c., and the mixture may be subjected to a further mixing shortly before it reaches the spinnerets if the distance to be travelled by the solution is such as to permit a partial separation of the oil to take place. Instead of oil or petroleum jelly, there may be added to the spinning solution a solution of a leuco vat colouring matter for the purpose of obtaining coloured filaments according to the process of Specification 181,902. Alternatively, a solid body such as carbon black or china clay may be incorporated in the spinning solution, which process is particularly suitable when spinning coarser filaments, the solid material being first mixed with a liquid. As a further modification, the material to be added, whether insoluble or soluble, may be first mixed with a portion of the spinning solution, and this concentrated solution then added to the main body of the spinning solution during its passage towards the spinning machine.
