Abstract

284,244. Touchon, J. M. A. Jan. 25, 1927, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Emulsions, making.-Rubber emulsions for use as a substitute for natural latex are prepared by passing a thick rubber solution together with water containing an emulsifying agent through a high speed emulsifying machine and removing the rubber solvent from the emulsified product by low temperature distillation. Alternatively finely divided rubber, preferably that obtained by spray-drying latex which containes natural dispersing agents, is introduced simultaneously with an emulsifying solution, into the machine. Dispersing or stabilizing agents may be added to the natural latex before drying or to the rubber resulting from its coagulation. Stabilizing agents may also be added to the rubber before delivery to the machine. Sulphur, accelerators, and colouring or loading materials may be incorporated either during the emulsification process or by subsequent treatment in the machine. Mixed emulsions of rubber and materials such as casein, cellulose esters or viscose, which have no solvent in common with rubber may be prepared either in one operation by passing the mixed ingredients through the machine, or by passing through a mixture of the separately prepared emulsions. The invention may be applied to gutta percha, balata, synthetic rubber and the like and to vulcanized rubber. Solvents suitable for use with the last-named material are hydrocarbons and their halogen derivatives or nitrates, phenols, fatty acids, ethers, fatty oils, terebine, petroleum, shale oil, bitumen, tar, anthracene. The invention is also stated to include the incorporation, by machines of the kind specified, of sulphur, aculination, and colouring or loading materials into natural latex.
