Abstract

290,493. Orchard, J. L., and Cambridge Instrument Co., Ltd. Sept. 14, 1927. Pyrometers.-In a thermo-electric pyrometer for a definite narrow range of temperature, in which a galvanometer &c. is used as an indicator, a bimetallic compensator for variations in cold junction temperature is arranged also to compensate for the temperature-resistance coefficient of the indicator at the said range. The necessity for using a high resistance with the indicator to compensate for the said coefficient is thus avoided and consequently a more open scale can be used for the range of the indicator. The bimetallic compensator 2 is attached at one end to one end of the spring 1 controlling the moving coil of the indicator, and at the other end to an arm 3 secured to a. spindle 4 carrying a pinion 6 and an arm 5. The pinion 6 is engaged by a pivoted rack 8 connected by a spring 12 to a spring-controlled plunger 11. By operating the plunger the spindle 4 is rotated so as to impart initial set to the spring 1 to prevent the indicator pointer from moving until the lower limit of the temperature range of the instrument is reached. The rotation of the spindle 4 is limited by stops 9, 10 with which the arm 5 coarts. A comparatively small series resistance may be used in addition to the bimetallic member for compensating the temperature-resistance coefficient of the indicator.
