Presses.--In an automatically-acting, constant-pressure, mechanical press for making bricks, tiles, and the like from dry clay, the pressure is applied by a lever 4 weighted at 14 and pivoted at 6 to the oscillatory links 7. The lever is connected to the pressure piston 13 of the mould, and is engaged at intervals by the eccentric 27 to raise it to release the moulded products. Clay is delivered to the hopper 39 and is removed in charges to the moulds by the sliding frame 41 which is reciprocated by the eccentric 47 so as to lie over the mould and under the hopper alternately. A plate 42 closes the hopper when the frame is over the mould. The clay is compressed between the upper movable pistons or rams 22 and lower fixed rams 25, the mould walls 26 sliding upwards on the columns 58 to form the mould space, and downwards to free the moulded article, through the medium of linkage driven from the shaft 65. An ejector 73 fitted with a rubber buffer is operated by linkage from the shaft 80 to push the moulded articles off the rams 25 on to a platform 97 when the mould walls are lowered. The platform 97 moves downwards with the mould walls so as to receive the ejected brick and on the return stroke moves upwards and forwards so as to present it for removal at the front of the machine.
