Abstract

289,999. Midgley, A. H. March 10, 1927. Addition to 280,981. Thermionic modulators.-A five-electrode valve constructed as described in the parent Specification is associated with external circuits in such a way as to generate high-frequency oscillations which are simultaneously modulated. As shown in the Figure, the anode A1 and grid G1 are coupled through a tuned circuit 1, 2 to generate oscillations of a frequency determined by the setting of the condenser 2, or by the condenser 4 if the first condenser is omitted. The grid G2 and cathode K are coupled to a circuit comprising a source of low-frequency current, such as the microphone 6, the amplified output from the anode A2 being applied by a tapping to the main inductance 1 to modulate the high-frequency currents fed to the aerial AE. The modulated output may be further amplified, either by using other similar valves connected in parallel, or by being passed through a series of standard amplifiers before reaching the aerial.
