Abstract

Pulverulent-fuel furnaces.-A pulverulent-fuel burner suitable for heating a steam boiler or metallurgical furnace has a casing comprising a cylindrical section 7 formed with a targential fuel and air inlet 41 and a conical section 6 having a cylindrical end 5 fitting the mouth of the furnace flue 2. A mixture of fuel and air passes from a main 25 through a pipe 38 to one branch of a Y-piece 40 connected to the inlet 41, and air from a main 14 passes through a preheating jacket 13 surrounding the section 6 to the other branch. The mixture then enters the section 7. and after circulating around a tube 45 arranged axially in the section 7, passes with a whirling motion through the conical section 6 to the flue. 2. The tube 45 is carried by an end cover 44 secured to the section. 7, the end cover and a rotatable flange 46 on the tube being provided with ports 43, 47 to allow the admission of a regulable amount of cold air to mix with the fuel and air in the section 7. A door 49 fitted with a pivoted sight-hole door 52 allows access to the interior of the burner for lighting up &c. A diaphragm 54 having twisted blades 55 is arranged adjacent the throat of the conical section 6 to prevent stratification of the mixture. The section 6 is formed with apertured fins and flanges 17 - - 20 to lengthen the passage of the air through the jacket 13. An aperture 9 in the fireclay lining of the section 6 allows molten slag to flow to a pot 10. A baffle or catcher 26 is arranged at the junction of the pipe 38 with the fuel main 25 and the pipe 38 is fitted with a shut-on valve 28, a butterfly regulating valve 30 and a check valve 39. The valve 30 is operated by a handwheel 33 through a spindle 34, a universal joint 37, and worm or quadrant gearing 31. 32. The pipe 15 connecting the main 14 to the jacket 13 is fitted with a regulating valve 16. To facilitate cleaning &c. the burner is attached by means of an adjustable suspension rod 58 to a trolley 61 running on a steel ioist 62 fixed above the boiler.
