Logs. - In a log of the kind in which the rotator projects into the water from the hull of the vessel whereon it is carried by a tubular housing, the rotator with its housing is inclined to the hull and directed towards the stern. The housing E is passed through an inclined bracket B carried by the hull A and is connected by electric cables F to the chart-room receiver. The rotator spindle K passes at its upper end through bearings K1 K2 contained in a sleeve K3, and at its lower end through a bearing K4 contained in a sleeve K5, the bearing K4 being enclosed by a ring K6 screwed into the lower end of the housing E and fitting closely around an enlargement K7 on the. spindle K. The rotator L has a number of vanes whereof the acting faces are helical surfaces so contoured as to present the maximum surface approximately at right-angles to the flow of water. The lower end of the housing E slightly overlaps the end of the rotator, and may be inclined to the hull as shown or parallel thereto. A lubricant container M communicates with the housing by way of valves M1, M2 and the spindle K is helically grooved at K9 to convey the lubricant, the flow of which is assisted by suction due to the partial vacuum set up around the bearing K4 owing to this bearing being shrouded by the housing E.
