Abstract

288,656. Suter, E. F. Oct. 8, 1926. Air and vapour douches.-Apparatus for drying the hair comprises a casing 1, Fig. 2, fitting loosely, or by means of a packing member 2, airtightly upon the head, and having a, perforated plate 13 fitting closely over the hair and spaced therefrom by stops 30. A second plate 14 covering the plate 13 encloses a space 17 communicating through a pipe 18 with a suction fan or exhauster. Air drawn off through the pipe 18 is replaced by air flowing into the casing through a pipe 7 and passing over a lamp 5 or other electric heating element. Tubes 15 passing through both of the plates 13, 14 provide a passage for the heated air to the hair and thence through the plate 15 to the pipe 18. The cold air may be supplied to the pipe 7 by a pump and may be heated by means outside the casing. The plate 14 may be replaced by one leaving a.n annular space around it within the casing, the tubes 15 being dispensed with. In this case the air beneath the plate 13 is not substantially disturbed but is heated by conduction and radiation and is dried by the passage of heated air in proximity to it. The casing 1 may be replaced by a smaller portable casing 14', Fig. 8, adapted to cover the whole or only a portion of the hair. The casing 14' has a perforated plate 22<1> placed in contact with the hair. a plate 22" spaced therefrom and partly covered by a plate 22"', the space thereby enclosed being connected with the suction device. Heating coils wound for example on mica strips are placed on each side of the plate 22<111> and connected by leads 18 to a plug 21<1>. Air is drawn in through holes in the casing 14', which is heat insulated, over the heating coils and through holes in the plate 22" into contact with the plate 22<1> and thence through holes 24' into the suction pipe 25<1>. In other constructions the casing is divided into two or more chambers closed at the bottom by a single or by separate perforated plates. Heated air is supplied to one or some of the chambers and thence beneath the plate or plates either direct or through nozzles and is withdrawn through the other chamber or chambers. The air withdrawn may be passed through a, condensing or other moisture removing device and this device together with the air supplying and withdrawing device may be mounted upon a mobile stand. The casing 1 may be suspended from a stand and connected with the air supplying and withdrawing means by flexible tubing. Combs may be provided on the under eide of the casing 1 in order to raise the hair and facilitate drying. Several casings such as 1 may be connected with common air supply and withdrawing means. The apparatus may also be employed for treating the hair with medicinal vapours.
