To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bnss E. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Medical Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
In medical research work it has been clemonstrated that heat is the most powerful of all vital stimulants, and electric heat lessens nervous irritability, and besides the body activities are increased under its influence. It is also well known that bacteria cannot stand light or the motion of water. The diffusion of light rays through live tissues will have powerful effect and will kill germs where they are located and besides act as a stimulus to the vital process in the parts exposed to the influence of the rays. There are numerous other advantages derived in applying heat, light rays and water to the body as well known in the medical profession.
The primary object of my invention is the construction of a single article capable of accomplishing the foregoing results.
An object of my invention is to provide an apparatus of simple, inexpensive construction which may discharge a spray upon the body or light rays or accomplish these two results simultaneously.
A feature of my invention is the novel manner of constructing and arranging the parts so that they will act in the most officient manner.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed sectional views of the spraying device.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one manner in which my invention may be constructed the numeral 1 designates a casing closed at one end as indicated at 2 and having its other end open as indicated at 3. This casing has connected thereto a bracket 4 to which is secured a handle 5 whereby the casing may be properly manipulated by the hand of the operator. Arranged within the casing is a partition 6 forming a water compartment 7 and a light chamber 8. The water compartment 7 connects with the hose 9. This hose may be connected in any suitable manner to a source of water supply so that the flow can be regulated or stopped entirely. Secured to the partition 6 is an electric socket 10 for receiving the electric bulb 11. The electric contacts of this socket are connected to the plug 12 so that the bulb may be illuminated or extinguished.
The spra device 13 consists of a series of concentrically arranged hollow rings 1 1, the bottom walls of which are provided with a plurality of discharge openings 15. These rings are effectively connected together in spaced relation by the water distributor 16 which may be of any required number. By spacing the rings 1 provide a plurality of light openings 17 and a central light passage 18 for the purpose of allowing the light rays, from the bulb 11, to eflectively pass through the spray device and act upon the body. Each distributer is provided with a neck 19 that has a detachable connection with the pipe 20 that communicates with the water compartment. The spray device is effectively held in place by a locking device, such as a screw 21. It is, of course, to be understood that various other locking devices may be used for holding the spraying device in position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that I provide an apparatus by means of which heat, light rays and jets of water may be regulated to act upon the body of the patient.
A feature of the invention is the construction and association of parts in such a manner that I am able to obtain the greatest condensation of light rays with the minimum amount of heat, due to the cooling effect of the circulating water in the rings, as the heat rays and light rays must pass through the rings before acting upon the body, thus having the great advantage that the device will not destroy or burn the tissues.
There are a number of other advantageous results that my device can accomplish in the medical practice but detailed description will be eliminated for the sake of clearness but I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction illustrated as the various parts may be constructed in other manners and associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is,
1. A medical apparatus comprising a casing having one end closed and the other end open, and divided into a water compartment and light chamber, a handle connected to the casing pipes communicating with the water compartment, and a spray device detachably supported at the open end of the casing and having a detachable connection with the pipes.

In a medical apparatus, a portable casing adapted to be applied to parts of a persons body and having one end open, light rays producing means in said casing, a water compartment in said casing remote from ter from said compartment and easing 1n a path substantially parallel to the path of said light rays.

In a medical apparatus, a portable casing adapted to be applied to parts of a persons body and having one end open, light rays producing means in said casing, a water compartment in said casing remote from said open end and pipes for discharging water from said compartment and casing in a path substantially parallel to the path of said light rays, and a 'sprayeriremovably mounted in the open end-of said casing'and having connection with said pipes, said sprayer comprising spaced connected concentric rings to permit the diffusion of light rays therebetween;
5. In a medical apparatus, the combination with a casing, of a spray device comprising a plurality of hollow spaced concentric rings and radial connections between said rings, said rings being provided with a plurality of perforations in one of their edge portions to permit the spraying of liquid therefrom, said rings being spaced to permit passage of light rays therebetween.
