288,027. Armstrong, Whitworth Air craft, Ltd., Sir W. G., Green, F. M., and Lloyd, J. April 5, 1927. Balancing.-An auxiliary surface 3 is automatically moved towards the leading edge of the main plane 2 at high speeds and away from it at low speeds by interconnection to a flap 7 at the trailing edge, this flap tending to hang down at low speeds owing to its weight or the action of a spring 8 but being raised by wind pressure at high speeds. Two surfaces 3 are arranged near the tips of the main plane and a flap 7 extends between the usual ailerons at the rear edge of the plane. The flap 7 may be divided into two or more parts. The surfaces 3 may be pivoted so that their angles of incidence may be varied. The flaps 7 may be hinged below the rear edge of the main plane to provide a slot when the flap is down.
