Electric hot-plates. -The metal plate 10, preferably of cast iron, is heated by inner and outer sheathed units arranged in zig-zag formation controlled by a three - way switch so as to be connected in series or parallel or so that the outer unit only is energised. There are inner and outer units in each half of the plate and each pair is independently controlled. The ends of the units are arranged at the centre of the plate and pass through a hole 36 in a heatinsulating magnesium block 35 mounted in a supporting frame 17. The switches and fuses are arranged in a recess in the front of the frame. The recess is open at the top and bottom to allow air to pass therethrough. The plate 10 has a raised back 12 and a peripheral trough 14, fitted with a drain hole 16. At the back of the plate a rib 13 on the underside engages brackets 20 so that the plate may be tilted backwards. Ribs are arranged on the underside of the plate between certain convolutions of the heating units, the latter being clamped to the plate by a plate 31 and screws engaging bosses 33 in the cooking plate. The heating units are of the type described in Specification 144,767, [Class 37, Electricity, Measuring &c.], and are of square or rectangular section. The turns of the resistance wire are spaced more closely together in the parts of the units adjacent the front edge of the plate.
