Materials for purifying.-Nitrogen oxides present as impurities are separated from gaseous mixtures, such as coke oven gas, prior to liquefaction, by hydrogenation in presence of a catalyst, e.g. reduced copper or iron, at a low temperature (not below 100‹ C.) and under atmospheric or higher pressure. The oxides may alternatively be removed by treatment at a high temperature with ammonium sulphate solution, yielding nitrogen and sulphuric acid.
