Abstract

287,178. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. March 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Addition to 281,290. Trihalogenaryl-sulphochlorides ; mercaptans and thioglycollic acids. - Trihalogenbenzenesulphochlorides or homologues thereof are produced by treating trihalogenbenzene or a homologue thereof with chlorsulphonic acid. On reduction, the product yields the corresponding mercaptan which, by condensation with chloracetic acid gives the trihalogenarylthioglycollic acid. In an example, 1: 2 : 3-triclhorbenzene-4-sulphochloride produced by treating 1 : 2 : 3-trichlorbenzene with chlorsulphonic acid is reduced with zinc dust,and sulphuric acid. The resulting mercaptan is steam distilled and condensed in alkaline solution with chloracetic acid. In other examples, 1- methyl - 2 : 3 : 4 - trichlorbenzene-5-thioglycollic acid and 1 : 2 : 4-trichlorbenzene-5-thioglycollic acid are similarly produced starting with 2 : 3 : 4- trichlortoluene and 1 : 2 : 4-trichlorbenzene respectively.
