Abstract
286,850. British Dyestuffs Corporation, Ltd., Saunders, K. H., and Wignall, H. Feb. 8, 1927. Ethylene glycol ; ethylene oxide. - Ethylene chlorhydrin is carried off by a current of steam from' a crude solution, and is continuously hydrolyzed in the vapour phase. The steam and vapour of the chlorhydrin are supplied at A to a tower B which receives at the top a solution of sodium carbonate or a strong solution of caustic soda for the production of glycol or ethylene oxide as the case may be. The vapour bubbles through a layer of the product in the bottom of the tower, and the steam passes away to a condenser D and an aqueous and oily layer separate in a catch pot E. Heat is applied to the bottom of the tower B so that the product may be concentrated, if desired up to the point at which sodium chloride crystallizes.
