Incandescent ignition.-A filament 1 placed in the chamber 6 is heated electrically at starting but during normal running its temperature is maintained by the heat of combustion. A separate coil 7 may however be fitted for use after starting has been effected by the coil 1. The chambers in which the filaments are housed are cut off from the cylinder by a valve 3 which is opened by the compression against the action of a spring 15. The time of ignition may be varied by adjusting the plate 13 which bears on the spring, and is held either by simple nuts on the studs 16, or by nuts toothed peripherally for engagement by an intermediate toothed wheel, or by a worm and wheel gearing. The valve guide-body may be in threaded engagement with its support, or may be retained therein by a plate 19 and nuts 18 carried by the studs 16. The valve seating may be integral with the valvebody 19, or with the cylinder head, or may be separate from each of these members. The whole device may be shaped externally to fit the opening usually occupied in the cylinder head by a sparking plug.
