Abstract
286,331. Harrison, W. Oct. 30, 1926. Starch and other carbohydrate derivatives.- Stable and permanent derivatives of starch and other carbohydrates are obtained by oxidizing a carbohydrate compound containing a CSS group, in the presence of ammonia or a derivative of ammonia not containing organic constituents, for example, hydroxylamine. The reaction may be carried out in alkaline, neutral or acid solution, and at normal or raised temperatures. The oxidizing-agents used are such as oxidize sulphuretted hydrogen, for instance, ferricyanides, bichromates, chlorates, hypochlorites, peroxides, nitrous acid, sulphurous acid, ferric salts, and air or oxygen with or without oxygen carriers ; when air or oxygen is employed this must be blown through the mixture, or the oxygen may be used the nascent state as produced by the electrolysis of the solution. In examples, the starting material is starch xanthogenate, and it mav be employed in alkaline solution, or after neutralizing with acetic, carbonic, sulphurous or other weak acid: the reaction is carried out at room temperature, or higher, for example, at 60‹ C. 'or 100‹ C. ; the products separate from the solutions, and are collected and washed, if desired, being acidified before or after washing : during or after the oxidation the product may be treated with acetone, carbon disulphide, sodium sulphite or other solvent for sulphur. Specifications 27732/12, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]; and 286.332 are referred to.
