Abstract
286,142. White, A. E., (Roots Co., P. H. & F. M.). June 28, 1927. Movable-abutment type; packing abutments.- In a fluid handling apparatus such as a gas meter comprising lobed impellers 15, 16 rotating in a housing 10 formed with a gas inlet 11 and a gas outlet 12, leakage of gas past the impellers and the deposit of tar and other impurities on the impellers are prevented by supplying a sealing and flushing liquid such as oil to the housing. The liquid is fed to the impellers from a tank 25 through sight-feed devices 31 and spaced distribution pipes 26 - - 30 entering the gas inlet 11. After passing through the housing the liquid is diverted by drip plates 40 into a sump 37 formed in the bed plate 35 and is then returned to the tank 25 by a pump 45. An overflow pipe 50 connecting the tank 25 to the sump 37 prevents the liquid level in the tank 25 from becoming excessive. A tank 60 fitted with a filling plug 62 and connected by pipes fitted with shut-off valves 61 to the pipe 50 allows the liquid in the system to be replenished during the operation of the apparatus. The outlet main may be fitted with a. trap 100, Fig. 5, provided with a baffle 104 in front of the gas outlet 101 and having a connection 46 to the pump 45. A gauge glass 102 indicates the amount of liquid in the trap and a removable plate 103 facilitates cleaning. When the trap 100 is used the sump in the bed plate may be dispensed with.
