Abstract

286,042. Preston, S. P. Jan. 6, 1927. Pivoting a d j u s tments. - In a hinge joint for rules, having its axis parallel to a face of the rule and comprising strips or members on the rule sections connected by a hinge pin, a spring or other resilient element or elements is or are arranged on the hinge pin to press the hinge parts into frictional engagement with one another to hold the rule straight. The hinge pin 1 carries a plurality of thin metal strips 2 each of which has an eye portion engaging the pin while the remaining part of the strip is embedded in a cut provided in the end of one of the wood sections of the rule. The pairs of strips 2 are spaced apart by means of a coil spring 5 which in the example shown is of square cross section and which keeps the strips of each pair pressed together. The usual cylindrical washers 6 are provided at the ends of the pin and are retained by countersunk heads 7 formed on the pin. Instead of coiled springs a tube of rubber may be used.
