Treating with gases; treatment by damping, heating, and steaming; treatment under reduced pressure.-Grain, seeds, fruits and nuts are treated with sulphur dioxide or a substance or substances liberating sulphur dioxide on treatment with acid such as sulphites, bisulphites, thiosulphates, hydrosulphites, thionates, or mixtures capable of yielding such substances', in the presence of one or more acids such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, acetic acid, or phosphoric acid, the acid always being present in excess. After treatment the acid can be partially or entirely neutralized with caustic soda, lime or soda. The sulphur dioxide or other substances may also be removed after treatment by oxidation with hydrogen peroxide or by nitric acid, or by heating or steaming the treated material, or by placing it under reduced pressure. The treated material may then be subjected to washing, heating, exposure to active light, or other ordinary processes or mav be treated with per-compounds.
