Electric appliances.-An electric resistance for electrotherapeutic apparatus particularly of the kind taking current from the mains consists of a non-conductive material which is adapted to be made conductive by the application of moisture or of a conductive material such as carbon or graphite. The latter may be incorporated permanently in the non-conductive material which may consist for example of asbestos fibre or cord. The resistance may comprise an insulating base 1 having two channels for resistance elements 5, and metal sockets 3 to receive plugs 2 having insulating heads 6. The sockets 3 are connected to the resistances 5 by metal pins 4 inserted in the ends of the resistances which consist of asbestos cords covered with absorbent sheaths 7 of buckskin or the like. The heads 6 are pressed towards coned collars 8 on the pins 4 by means of screws 9 screwed into the pins 4 so that the ends of the sheaths 7 are nipped between the heads 6 and collars 8. The heads 6 have studs 11 to enable them to be pulled out of the sockets 3. The sheaths 7 are bound to the asbestos cords by insulating bands 10. Terminals 12 are fixed at intervals in one of the resistances 5 and are connected to the studs of a rotary switch 14 to enable the valve of the resistance in the circuit to be varied. To use the apparatus the resistances 5 are removed and soaked in water and then replaced with the plugs 2 in the sockets 3. The base 1 may be provided with a hinged cover.
