Abstract
285,630. Marks, E. C. R., (American Smelting & Refining Co.). Jan. 21, 1927. Dry processes of refining lead and other metals.-A molten metal such as lead is treated for the removal of impurities such as zinc by subjecting it to the action of a gaseous reagent such as chlorine in a reaction chamber through which the molten metal is repeatedly passed. The plant shown comprises a kettle for the molten lead and a pump 3 driven by a motor 2 for circulating the lead through a chamber 6 to which chlorine is admitted through a pipe 20. The dross of zinc chloride which forms may be confined within an iron ring 12 dipping into the lead and is removed by skimming. In a modification, the reaction chamber, pump, and motor may be formed as a single unit.
