Abstract
250,726. Hooper, L. D. March 6, 1925. Dry processes of extracting platinum group metals. - Platinum and other platinum group metals are separated from ores, concentrates, and other materials by subjecting the materials to the action of carbon monoxide in the presence of catalytic or other materials under such conditions that carbonyl compounds of the platinum group metals are formed. The material present with the carbon monoxide in the formation of the carbonyl compounds may be a halogen, particularly chlorine, together with a halide of an alkali or alkaline earth. Phosgene may be used; or carbon monoxide may be applied alternately with a substance such as chlorine. In some cases the ore to be treated may be preliminarily ground with a deflocculating or like agent such as gallotannic acid. The carbonyl compounds may be separated from the ores &c. and from each other by volatilization or solution and may be decomposed by heat with or without reaction with water. An ore containing platinum and other platinum group metals may be treated with carbon monoxide or acid for removal of the iron and other easily attached metals; the remaining ore may then be heated with sodium and with carbon monoxide and chlorine, yielding mixed sublimates which are again treated with carbon monoxide for the production of a single carbonyl compound of platinum. Carbonyl compounds of the other platinum group metals are obtained from the remaining ore by treatment with carbon monoxide under different conditions of temperature and pressure and in the presence of different reagents.
