Universal joints.-In flexible-disc couplings for motor - vehicles &c., sleeves are arranged in the bolt-holes to limit the compression of the disc by the nuts securing it to the spiders. Tubes 4, Fig. 3, disposed in each bolt-hole 2 in the disc 1 with a space 5 between their ends, are mounted in and may be secured, as by forcing, expanding, or brazing, to the sector-shaped or trapezoidal reinforcing-plates 3, riveted together through the disc. In place of mounting each tube 4 in a plate 3, it may be brazed to the inner face thereof, or may be formed integrally therewith by stamping or extrusion. In a modification, the tubes 4 are shorter and lie within a tubular liner, the ends of which are slightly spaced from the inner faces of the plates 3 and coact with them to limit the compression of the disc 1. As shown in Fig. 7, the tubes 4 may be omitted, a single liner 12 being provided, having terminal gaps between it and the plates 3. In another form, the tubes. 4 telescope into one another. The edges of the plates 3 are chamfered to avoid cutting the disc.
