Variable-speed ratchet gearing comprises invariable oscillating levers each of which comprise parallel arms 23, 32, Fig. 7, connected by a pivot gudgeon 19 supported in a fixed bracket 15. One arm 23 of each lever is connected through a rod 8 &c., Figs. 5 and 6, to a crank 11 or on a driving. shaft 5. Upon each of the other arms is a slider 36, Fig. 7, upon which a connecting-rod 45 is pivoted. Each rod 45 oscillates a separate friction ratchet 57. The sliders 36 are moved up and down on the lever-arms 32 in unison to vary the speed, and this is effected by each slider being engaged by one of a group of slotted plates 74 fast upon a plate 75 which is moved by a control rod 78. Each ratchet comprises a pair of side plates joined together at a wedge block 61, Fig. 9, and joined also on the other side of driven rotor 49 by a grip-block 60. The rotor 49 is gripped across a diameter between the block 60 and a spring-pressed roller 62 which is jammed in one direction by the block 61.
