Ascension pipes ; condensing, scrubbing, and washing processes.-Coke oven gases are used for the distillation of tar by conveying the gases from a number of ovens to a collector main while the gases are still at a temperature high enough to distil the tar, continuously spraying the gases with tar, and removing, cooling and condensing the vapours obtained. The tar and pitch remaining at the bottom of the main are removed by atomizing or spraying them into the gases passing through the main. A battery of ovens 5 is connected to a main 7 by goose-neck up-take pipes 6 and the gases are delivered through a centre box 8 to a cross-over main 9. Tar is introduced into the collector main by nozzles 15, 16, and the liquor ir. the main is agitated by paddles 11 on a rotating shaft 10. The gases passing through the main 9 are sprayed with ammonia through nozzles 21 and are then delivered to the condensers. The centre box 8 is formed to hold a. larger quantity of tar than usual to prevent accumulation of hard pitch. The tar in the mains may alternatively be agitated by rotating shafts 35, Fig. 4, carrying cones 37, by rotating discs, or by a series of injectors.
