Air-trapping and removing.-In apparatus in which liquid is raised by a pump from a storage tank to a measuring- chamber, means are provided between the measuring-chamber and the source of supply for continually removing air from the liquid during charging of the chamber in order to prevent surging and formation of air bubbles. An auxiliary chamber 5 is arranged between the storage tank and the measuring-chamber 1, the pipe 6 from the tank reaching nearly to the top of the chamber 5. The supply pipe 3 to the measuring- chamber reaches nearly to the bottom of the chamber 5. The liquid is raised by pumping air from the measuring-chamber 1 through the pipe 13. Any air in the liquid tends to collect at the top of the chamber 6 and is removed therefrom through a small bore pipe 7 connected to the top of the measuring chamber. In cases where the pipe 3 communicates with the chamber 1 through a multi-way cock 4, when the cock is suddenly closed fluid " hammer " takes place in the pipe 3 and liquid is forced up through the pipe 7 into the measuring-chamber. To obviate this, a chamber 8 is interposed in the pipe 7 and a pipe 10 leads from the chamber 8 through a non- return valve 11 back to supply. In a modification the pipe 9 has a non-return valve and dips into the chamber 8 reaching nearly to the bottom where it is not in alignment with the pipe 7. In this case the liquid entering the chamber 8 due to " hammer " action is retained there during the emptying of the chamber 1, but is sucked into the chamber during the next filling operation.
