Abstract

213,517. Stanley, F. W. Oct. 2, 1922. Fixed-chamber apparatus; with discharge by separate fluid; varying quantity measured in.- Comprises syphon apparatus in which the liquid is forced by fluid pressure from a tank up and down the members of a U-tube into the measuring chamber until a point is reached above the actual amount required, the feed pressure being then released and the excess allowed to syphon back to the tank. The apparatus comprises upper and lower tanks 10, 11 separated by a partition 23 through which passes a small pipe 12. The tanks are connected by an inverted U-tube 13 one leg of which is surrounded by a pipe 15, one end of which is open to the lower tank, the pipe passing to the top of the upper chamber, terminating in a gland or fitting and a valve 18 communicating with the tank 10. The other leg of the tube 13 is provided with a valve 17 at the bottom and encloses one leg of an inverted U-tube 16, the other leg of which depends into a measuring vessel 12a, and by the depth to which is immersed determines the amount of liquid to be left in the measuring vessel. Normally, the arrangement is as shown in Fig. 1. Compressed air is now introduced to the pipe 15 at 20 and the liquid is forced from the tank 11 around the tube 13 up through the tube 16 into the container 12a until it rises on the vessel above the outlet 16<a>. The compressed air is then released into the chamber 10 by opening the valve 18 and the excess of liquid above the outlet 16a in the vessel 12a is syphoned back through the pipes 16 and 13, the vats 17 opening. Instead of the pipe 12 a well may be formed below the large bore of the tube 13 to accommodate this tube, and a small hole in the bottom of the well provides communication between the tanks. The apparatus can be used for filling the tank 10 when empty by immersing the end 16<a> of the pipe 16 into the supply liquid and pumping a small amount of liquid into the pipe 16. The air pressure is then released and the liquid allowed to syphon into the tank 10. One Provisional Specification refers to Specification 213,297.
