Regulation, automatic. - A quantity to be regulated such as current, voltage, power, power-factor, or speed, is measured by an instrument having a pointer 1, which co-operates with a drop bracket 6 so that every time the bracket is depressed the pointer, if the quantity has deviated from normal, is pressed into engagement with contacts 2, 3 or 4, 5 to cause a motor 14 to rotate one way or the other to adjust said quantity, for example to adjust a resistance in the exciting circuit for a motor or dynamo or a steam or water valve. The bracket 6 is periodically depressed by a magnet 8 under the control of a rotating contact disc 11. If the deviation of the quantity is great, then the pointer when depressed, also bridges contacts 17 or 18 and thus maintains the magnet 8 energized for a longer period so that the motor 14 effects a greater regulating step. Alternatively a great deviation may cause the periodicity of depression of the bracket to be doubled by bringing auxiliary brushes on the disc into circuit. The disc may also be replaced by a bimetallic thermal element. To prevent over regulation should the pointer or the bracket stick, an overcurrent relay 19 opens the motor circuit or a time delay switch may open a definite time after depression of the bracket, and the switch is reset upon the next operation.
