Casings and walls; linings.-A blast furnace has an upper armour-plated brickwork lining 8 supported, independently of the lower lining 7, by brackets 11 secured to the furnace shell 6. The brackets 11 support an annular plate 15, Fig. 4, provided at its edges with angleiron rings 16, 17 which are bolted to the brackets, the latter and the rings 16, 17 being embedded in the brickwork as shown. The armour plating of the upper lining 8 is constituted by downwardly projecting flanges 13 of plates 12 which are arranged in the brickwork 8 in horizontal rows and have up-turned flanges 14 at the outer ends; the plates 12 are so disposed that adjacent flanges 13 are in contact. The lower lining 7 is supported by pillars 10, while the weight of the bosh wall 9 is taken by the furnace foundations.
