Abstract

288,072. Coplan, A. H. July 18, 1927. Cu p o l a furnaces: casings, walls, and linings. - The usual refractory lining of a cupol a furnace is wholly or in part replaced by an inner steel wall 11 spaced from the outer casing 12 so as to form an airheating chamber 16 to the lower end of which air is admitted tangentially at 17 and from the upper end of which the heated air passes, through conduit 19 and air-belt 20 to the tuyeres 21. The steel wall 11 is built up of superposed sections 13 bolted together and is formed on its outer face with radiating and directing ribs 14 which may be formed either by a plurality of horizontal fins or by a single helical one. The air-belt 20 is formed of adjustably connected sections and the tuyeres 21 are of inwardly converging form in plan, as shown in Fig. 2.
