Abstract

278,370. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Sept. 29, 1926, [Convention date]. Aluminium chloride and salts thereof in general.-In the treatment of argillaceous materials, such as clay, kaolin, or bauxite, with an acid such as hydrochloric acid to effect solution of the aluminium content thereof, the raw material, held in a stationary container, is kept covered with acid throughout the treatment, and the inflow of acid and outflow of the solution obtained are so regulated that a temperatures of at least 105‹ C., and it may be of 120‹ C., is attained in the downwardly progressing zone of maximum reaction by the heat of reaction. To obtain the required temperature large batches of the raw materials are employed, generally in the form of a deep column, the aluminium content being fully extracted by a single passage of the acid. Preheated acid, diluted with liquor used to wash the residue from a preceding operation, may be used to initiate the reaction.
