Filters having sheet filtering - materiels - A filter, specially adapted for the treatment of fuel for internal - combustion engines comprises a cone 6 of chamois leather, silk. or like filtering- medium held at the edge between conical parts 1, 2 of a casing and attached at the apex by an axially bored screw to a hollow rod 8 which passes through a sleeve-like extension 10 of the part 2. The parts 1, 2 are formed with an inlet 4 and outlet 5 respectively. To clean the medium 6 a handle 9 is unscrewed from the part 10 and the rod 8 is drawn sharply upward so that the cone is reversed and liquid passes backward through the medium. Impurities thus removed from the medium and matter which had collected below a perforated cone 15 are discharged on removal of a plug 11. A passage 13 formed in the rod S serves as an air vent. The filter, as shown in Fig. 4, may be combined with a carburettor. The fuel enters the filter through a constant-level chamber 18 'and the filtrate passes to the carburettor jets 21, 22. The passage 20 leading to the jets may be provided with a shut-off valve and also with an outlet valve, flow through which will cause suction through the jets and help to keep them clear. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 7 the liquid is supplied through an inlet 30 and the filtrate passes through a passage 32 and the constant-level chamber 18 on its way to the jets. The filtering-medium 6<1> is folded to form an annular pocket and attached to a perforated disc 29 on the rod 8<11>.
