Abstract

Pitch and tar; materials for making coke.- Acid-tar, obtained in purifying benzols by treatment with concentrated sulphuric acid, is heated with a concentrated solution of ammonium sulphate. Residual benzol hydrocarbons are vaporized and resins separate out as a floating fused mass which on cooling hardens into a, cake which can be removed. The resins form a pitch-like mass which after being washed with water may be mixed with coal tar to increase the pitch content, or may be distilled with coal in a coke oven.
