21,800. Gutensohn, A. Oct. 15. Tar; pitch; distilling tar.-Gas-tar is treated with a strong solution of chromic and sulphuric acids in admixture in order to facilitate subsequent distillation, and to improve the quality of the pitch. The heat created by the addition of the tar to the acid solution causes an evolution of the light oils ; the acid solution is then drawn off, and the residue is distilled at a lower temperature than usual for the recovery of the heavy oils and the formation of pitch. A modification of the process is described whereby a dilute acid solution may be employed. The solution may eventually be treated for the recovery of chromic acid ; or it may be boiled to dryness, and the residue calcined to form a green pigment.
