Bottling.-In apparatus for filling bottles and other containers by partially evacuating them, the incoming liquid, when it reaches the desired height, closing the end of the vacuum tube and preventing further entry of the liquid, the emptying of the interceptor or overflow receptacle is unobstructed and is effected by gravity alone, the receptacle being under a constant partial vacuum. Suction from a container 11 in communication with an air pump 12 draws air through a reducing valve 10 from an interceptor 7 disposed above the level of a liquid tank 4 and communicating with it by a pipe 8. The interceptor communicates by a tube 6 with a filling-head 3 so that the reduced pressure in the interceptor draws liquid 'into the bottle through a tube 5 dipping into the liquid and connected to the filling-head 3. The tube 5 leads into a passage 3<e>, Fig. 6, which conducts the liquid to a filling tube 3f, there being also provided in the head a vacuum tube 3h and a breaker tube 3i, this latter tube having a small orifice x permanently open to the atmosphere. In operation, a bottle being applied to the filling-head, liquid is sucked into it through the tube 5 until liquid reaches the vacuum tube 3h, whereupon further incoming liquid passes up the tube 6 to the interceptor 7. If the bottle is not removed, allowing the liquid in the tube 5, the tube 6, and the interceptor 7 to run back into the tank 4, the increased vacuum causes the reducing valve to close wholly or partly the connection to the container 11 and so stop or retard the flow of liquid to the interceptor. The reducing valve comprises a needle valve supported by a weight resting on a diaphragm which constitutes the base of the valve, but the valve may be disposed in the interceptor and be actuated by the level of liquid therein. The invention is applicable to rotary bottling machines, the bottle supports, filling-heads and interceptor being rotatable and the liquid tank either rotatable or fixed. In the latter instance, liquid from a supply tank 44, Fig. 5, flows to an annular channel 43<a> in a fixed member 38 and the filling tube 5 and interceptor discharge tube 45, which are rotatably mounted, communicate with the channel.
