Abstract
276,691. Lund, W. Aug. 26, 1926. [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Fire extinguishing by gases; sprinklers, automatic; fires, preventing in road vehicles and in receptacles for inflammable fluids; inflammable fluids, cutting off in cases of fire.-An arrangement for extinguishing carburettor fires comprises a fusible or expansive device controlling valves for cutting off the fuel supply and for admitting an extinguishing medium, for example carbon-dioxide under pressure. The pipes 1. 2 supplying fuel to the carburettors are controlled by valves 5, 6 co-operating with seats 3, 4. The valve 5 is held in open position by an arm 9 and fusible wire 8, and has at its rear end a valve body 10 controlling a pipe 7 from a gas bottle. The valve 6 has at its inner end a differentialpiston 19 having a large face in a chamber 13 not under pressure, and a small annular face 15 under pressure of the gas by a passage 16 and chamber 17. A coned part 20 of the piston prevents egress of the gas from the chamber 17. When the wire 8 melts the arm 9 is moved to the right by a spring or an electromagnetic device (shown in dotted lines) and the valve 5 is closed and the valve 10 is opened. The latter now allows the compressed gas to pass by the passage 12 to the large face of the piston 19, closing the valve 6 and fuel inlet 1, and allowing the extinguishing gas to pass by a passage and pipes 21, 22, 23 to the carburettor and engine. The device must be reset before the fuel supply can be restarted.
