Abstract

Hydrocarbons, cracking; rectifiers. - The vapours from a still, in which mineral oils, or mixtures of coal, lignite &c. with crude or fuel oil, tar, pitch, &c. are cracked, are passed through a region in which a constant temperature is maintained by introducing into contact with the vapours a liquid such as water or benzol, or a mixture of liquids, having a constant boiling point. The constant temperature zone may be formed in a column or tower surmounting the still and containing trays, or a highly porous material onto which water, &c. is continuously or intermittently fed. The tower may be packed with Raschig rings. The condensate will normally be returned to the still. The temperature of the cracking still is 410-460‹ C., and the boiling-point of the liquid introduced into the constant temperature zone may be varied by using pressures of 5-10 kg. per sq. cm. for example a constant temperature zone of 165‹ C. is obtained when water is used and a pressure of 7 kg. per sq. cm. is maintained. The first Provisional Specification describes the invention as applicable generally in distilling and rectifying operations, and refers to the use of mercury for obtaining a constant temperature zone.
