Abstract

Packing, compound metallic and non- metallic.-Metal clips b, of cast-iron or bronze &c., are secured to opposite edges of a strip a, of fibrous material such as asbestos, cotton, or impregnated canvas or duck, having a longitudinal cut c, and the strip is folded to the form shown in Fig. 3, the clips forming the wearing surface. A strip h of asbestos impregnated with graphite &c. may be placed in the fold, and the sides and back of the packing may be covered with a similar strip i secured by wire staples k, &c. The portions f of the clips may be omitted. In a modification, opposite clips are replaced by a single clip, which extends also round the interior of the fold. The packing may be wound helically.
