Measuring consumption of fuel with respect to mileage of vehicles. -Relates to apparatus for indicating the consumption in miles per gallon of fuel by a motor vehicle &c A shaft 26 driven by a shaft 29 connected to a running part of the vehicle, is coupled by clutch plates 31, 33 to a shaft 32 during the period taken for a measuring chamber 1 to empty. The shaft 32 is geared to an indicating drum 39 which is read against a pointer 41 The measuring chamber 1 contains a float 11 which, when it reaches its bottom position, moves a rod 10 connected with a lever 13. This lever opens a supply valve 7, and closes a valve 16 in a port leading to a reservoir 4 connected with the carburettor. An extension of the rod closes a switch 19 in a circuit controlling the clutch 31. The chamber 1 then fills, and when the float reaches its top position, the rod 10 is moved to close the valve 7, open the valve 16, and open the switch 19. While the chamber 1 is filling and the switch 19 is closed, a solenoid 25 in the circuit keeps the clutch 31, 33 open and the plate 33 is locked by a brake 56 actuated by an electromagnet 54. While the chamber is emptying, and the switch 19 is open, the clutch is closed by a fork 46 acted on by a spring 50, and the indicating drum is driven. A dash-pot 64 is provided, and when the brake 56 is released, a spring 35 returns the drum 39 until a pin 57 contacts with a stop 58. A link 51 actuates a meter 52 which indicates the quantity of fuel left in the main tank. A shutter connected to a link 44 closes the sight opening of the drum 39 while the drum is being set. The circuit is preferably taken off the ignition battery of the vehicle, and is controlled by the ignition switch 61. The clutch plate 31 may be operated by a mechanical connection with the rod 10.
