Abstract
354,742. Petrol tanks float valves. SUTTON, C. J., 19, Nelson Square, Bolton, Lancashire. March 5, 1930, No. 7144. [Classes 69 (i) and 135.] In a motor road vehicle, a reserve petrol tank is so arranged that the main tank cannot be filled without filling the reserve tank. In one form, as shown in the Figure, a reserve tank 3 is formed in the main tank 2 by a partition 2a. After discharge of petrol from the main tank through the pipe 5, the reserve tank may be discharged through a pipe 6 by actuation of a valve 7 by means of a handle 8a. The valve 7 has a float 7a attached to it, and is rigidly connected to a weight 7b and short arm 7c, being pivoted at a. When the valve is opened by depressing the handle 8a, and so moving the arm 7c, the weight 7b passes over the pivot, and retains the valve in an open position until insufficient petrol remains to buoy up the float member 7a, thus closing the valve. In a modification the actuation of a spring-pressed valve allows the whole of the contents of the reserve tank to pass into the main tank for use therefrom.
