Water supply.-In a water supply device for railway vehicles &c. wherein compressed air is used to discharge the water from a tank or reservoir, a self-seating valve normallv closes the compressed air space of the tank &c. from the atmosphere and is operated, when the filling orifice of the tank is to be opened, so as to shut off admission of compressed air to the tank &c. and to open the latter to the atmosphere. As shown, a casing a is divided into two compartments d, e, communication between the compartments being normally closed by a spring-pressed valve f seating on a rubber ring g; water is supplied to the compartment d as required either by a hydrant connected to a spigot o normally closed by a cap p, or by hand through the top of the compartment which is normally closed by a hinged cover q and is provided with a screen t. A pipe n connects compartments e to the water tank b. Air supply to the tank b passes from pipe 2 through pipe 4 under control of the winged end x<2> of a valve x which at its opposite end controls air escape ports 5. To recharge the tank b with water, a spindle 6 is rocked by a handle 9, a tappet 8 thereon first acting through a spring-pressed plunger v to move the valve x to close the air supply to, and open the air escape from, the tank b; further movement causes a tappet 7 to move the valve f to admit water from the compartment d. A notched bar 10 is provided to lock the handle 9 in any desired position. Specification 185,519 is referred to.
