The invention has relation to valve operating devices, being designed for the protection of gas and oil companies, whereby the tanks of filling stations cannot be filled without the use of special operating means for valves controlling the passages of inlet pipes to said tanks, said operating meansbeing carried in part by the nozzles of the filling pipes of the tank wagons. That is to say, an ordinary filling pipe nozzle, while it is insertible in the inlet pipe to the ground tank, will not operate or function to open the valved inlet pipe, so that the filling station or ground tanks will be lillable only with the oil of the particular company, the nozzles of the tank wagons and the filling station tanks of which are equipped with the present invention.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as set forth in the appended claims.

In these drawings, the numeral l designates a pipe buried in the ground and leading to the tank of the filling station, said pipe carrying at its upper or ground surface end, a two-part casting 2, bolted together at 3, and containing a valve operating lever 4, one arm` of which has connection at 5 with a valve 6, normally closing said pipe. The lever 4 is fulcrumed intermediately of its length at 7 and the opposite arm thereof is forked at 8, the forks being out of the path of the filling pipe nozzle 9, said nozzle being adapted to fit the opening 10, leading into said hollow casting 2, the latter being of course in communication with the pipe 1,
the opening or inlet of which is controlled by said valve.
The nozzle 9 is provided with pivoted catches 11 one at each side, said catches being capable of being closed' towards each other as in Figure 2, (dotted lines) for insertion into the opening of casting 2, `and being weighted to automatically "open 'as ,lin VFig- -u-re 2Y (full lines) when' completely inserted, F so that ythe outer arms of the catches will eny gage the forks 8 fof said lever and operate the lever to open the valve. Upon'reverse movement of the nozzle ,9, the outer arms of said pivoted catches will engage the lower end of the short pipe leading into the casting 2 and he closed towards each other again so that the nozzle may be withdrawn.
In Figure 1 of the drawings, a double filling pipe for the ground tank of the filling" station is shown, equipped with upper openings l2, each of which is controlled by a valve 6, each valve having an operating lever 4, and the nozzle being equipped with o-pposite catches 11 for operating both levers to open"t P both valves.
The catches 11 have each an upper lug 14 which when the catch is automatically positioned or opened to approximately horizontal position engages the outer side of the low-1v er end of the nozzle 9 to hold the catch in open position when the outer arm of the catch engages a fork of the lever 4. In thewithdrawal of the nozzle, the outer arm of the` catch engages the lower end of the short pipeleading into the casting 2, thereby automatically closing the catch to upright position within the nozzle so that the latter may be withdrawn.
In Figure 4 of the drawings a modification A is shown having a single opening or filling pipe 1 to the ground tank and a single op-v erating lever 4 for the valve 6 controlling said opening, the said lever having operating connection at 5 with the stem of said valve,` 9

In a valve operating device, a pipe having a valve, an operating lever` for said valve, a filling pipe nozzle, and means whereby said lever is operated to open said valve upon nsertion of said nozzle, said lever having a forked end outof-the pathof said nozzle and said nozzle having weighted pivoted catches adapted to be closed-together for insertion into the filling pipeand thereafter to automatically open to engageV the forked vend of said lever.
