Abstract

275,035. Hiscock, P. H. Sept 6, 1926. Surface-grading machines.- An earth scoop 5 mounted on a wheeled frame may be tilted and held in various positions for cutting hard ground or clay, or for taking up a load of earth, gravel, &c., for dumping and spreading earth with a fairly level surface as in road construction, as shown in Fig. 7, for transporting a load, or for dumping a load in a heap. The body of the scoop has curved and straight portions with a cutting edge 5<g>, and is mounted to turn on a fixed axle in the frame 1, 1<a> at a position forward of and lower than the axles of the wheels 3. The scoop is rotated and held by a ratchetoperated winch 19 acting on ropes 16, 17 secured to a pulley 18 on the scoop. The drum 19 or its spindle is connected with three ratchet wheels 20, 21, 21<a>. The wheels 20, 21 are operated by pawls 23, 24 on a hand lever 22, and holding. pawls are provided to engage with the wheels 20, 21a. The scoop may also be held by chains 14<b>, 14<c>, provided with hooks to engage the edges 5<h> and holes 14d in the body, respectively.
