Abstract

Carving. - In a multiple copying machine for wood carving the cutter spindles are carried in a separate head 87 connected to the forward end of radius members 110 which support the driving motors. For this purpose each cutter spindle 86 is carried by means of universally-adjustable bearing sleeves 94 in forks 91 attached to hollow aluminium frames 89 carried by four transverse steel tubes 88. The bearing sleeves 94 are held by screws 95 in rings 92, themselves held by screws 93 in the forks 91. Three frames 89<a>, similar to the frames 89 but without the forks 91, are provided for supporting the tubes 88, for which purpose each of the frames 89a is attached to a member 103 hung from counterweighted arms 102 on a shaft 100. Additional support is provided by cables 106 depending from counterweighted levers 105 and supporting a transverse tube 106<a> which holds up the frames 89<a> by means of loose saddles 106<b>. The tubes 88 are stayed laterally by means of three radius members 110 formed of steel tubes 111 and arranged to connect the tubes 88 to vertical arms 109 on a shaft 108 supported parallel to the shaft 100. The tubes 111 also carry three driving motors 115 by means of crescent-shaped frames 116, each of which engages each of the lower tubes 111 by three rollers 118 and carries the motor by means of screw studs 117. Each motor drives two groups of three cutter-spindles through belt gearing 122, and the machine shown includes eighteen cutter spindles, nine on each side of a central tracer 86<1>, which is moved over the pattern by hand. The corresponding work pieces are supported between a set of headstocks 30 and tailstocks 60. Each headstock comprises a reversible head 40 mounted on a spindle 35 carried in adjustable bearings 37 and capable of being rotated through worm gearing 47 by a common shaft 49 operated by a handle 56. The bearings (not shown) in each headstock for the shaft 49 are of the same kind as the bearings carrying the cutter spindles. Each tailstock 60 comprises a spindle 70 which can be advanced through bearings 71 or retracted against an adjustable spring 77. A set screw 81<a> serves to lock the spindle in advanced position. The various tailstocks are carried by two parallel plates 61, and the head-stocks by two plates 31, which are fixed to rails 8 on which the tailstocks can slide. The rails 8 can be locked in any desired position on the bed rails 2 by means of bolts engaging holes 22 and operated by a treadle 18 and links 14. The legs 3 carry- .ing the bed are connected to feet 5 by slots and bolts, to allow of adjustment for an uneven floor.
