Abstract

274,797. Hercules Powder Co., (Assignees of Smith, L. T.). July 20, 1926, [Convention date]. Devulcanizing rubber. - In the reclaiming of rubber and fabric from scrap a terpene derivative mixture is used having a boiling point range of 160-200‹ C. and a specific gravity of 0.86. This derivative may be the fraction of the extraction of pine wood distilled between 160-200‹ C., and consists mainly of dipentene, but also contains pinene, terpinen, terpinolene, fenchene, camphene, cymene, menthane and limonene. As solvent may also be employed pine oil which has been heated with a dehydrating agent such as fuller's earth, iodine, or sulphuric acid. According to an example, one part of scrap rubber is heated to 100-180‹ C. with 1-5 parts of solvent as above until dissolved, and is strained through a screen. The fabric remaining on the screen may be heated again with further solvent. The solution, after further straining, is distilled to remove the solvent with which the sulphur has combined. The solvent may be freed from sulphur for future use by fractional distillation or by heating with caustic soda.
