Abstract

A solvent for recovering rubber &c. from scrap such as tyres consists of a mixture of terpenes boiling between 160 and 200 DEG C. This mixture is obtained either by distillation as a middle cut between turpentine and pine oil or by treating pine oil with a dehydrating agent, such as fuller's earth, iodine, dilute sulphuric acid, and distilling.ALSO:To recover rubber, fibre, &c. scrap such as tyres is heated at 100-180 DEG C. with a mixture of terpenes boiling between 160 and 200 DEG C. The fibres are strained off and may then be subjected to a second extraction followed by beating and washing with soap solution. The solution of rubber is filtered from pigments, and the solvent, carrying with it the free sulphur is separated by distillation, preferably under reduced pressure. A small percentage of solvent is left in the rubber to act as a softener. The terpene mixture may be obtained by distillation as a middle cut between turpentine and pine oil, or by treating pine oil with a dehydrating agent, such as fullers' earth, iodine, dilute sulphuric acid, and distilling. Information is given as to the composition of the mixture and as to its solvent power compared with other terpene constituents and mixtures.
