273,347. Thomas, J., Drescher, H. A. E., and Scottish Dyes, Ltd. Dec. 24, 1925. Sulphonic acids of 2-benzoylbenzoic acids; anthraquinone sulphonic acids. - Halogen-2-beuzoylbenzoic acids (other than (3<1>-nitro-4<1>-halogen)-2-benzoylbenzoic acids) are treated in the form of their salts with a sulphite or bisulphite at temperatures above 100‹ C., whereby the halogen is replaced, by tbe sulphonic group if the parent material contains more than one halogen atom only part of the halogen may be replaced. The products yield the corresponding anthraquinone sulphonic acids when treated with condensing agents such as oleum in the usual manner. According tn examples there are obtained (1) 4<1>-sulpho-2-benzoyl-benzoic acid and anthraquinone-2-sulphonic acid from 4<1>-chlor-2 benzoylbenzoic acid; (2) a sulpho-methyl-2-benzoylbenzoic acid and 1-methylanthraquinone-4- sulphonic acid from chlormethyl-2-benzoylbenzoic acid (made by condensing p-chlortoluene with phthalic anhydride); (3) a dichlordisulpho-2- benzoylbenzoic acid and a dichloranthraquinonedisulphonic acid from 3 : 4 : 5 : 6-tetrachlor-2- benzoylbenzoic acid; (4) a mixture, of sulphomethyl-2-benzoylbenzoic acids and a mixture of methylanthraquinonesulphonic acids from a mixture of chlormethyl-2-benzoylbenzoic acids (obtained from o-chlortoluene and phthalic anhydride); (5) a chlorsulpho-2-benzoylbenzoic acid and 1-chloranthraquinone-9-sulphonic acid from dichlor-2-benzoylbenzoic acid (from 3 : 6-dichlorphthalic anhydride and benzene).
