Abstract
272,218. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Weed, J. M.). June 2, 1926, [Convention date]. Phase, changing.-A current of substantially rectangular wave shape is supplied to a welding arc. This is effected by inserting in the arc circuit two iron cored reactances 1, 2 excited by d.c. coils 3, 4, the excitation being carried beyond the saturation point. The a.c. coils 8, 9 are arranged in opposition, and the double frequency current they produce in the d.c. circuit is choked out by a reactance 10. The double frequency current can be entirely eliminated by coupling two arcs to a two-phase circuit, as in Fig. 2. In this case compensating resistances 23 are fitted in shunt to the arc, the circuit through the resistances being opened or closed by switches 21 controlled by switches 19.
